The PIEoneer Awards: Global Innovation in International Education Showcased in London

A global field of international education innovators, including language app developer Duolingo, the University of Sheffield's marketing campaign #WeAreInternational and a group to promote gender equality in international education, have been recognised for outstanding achievement at the inaugural PIEoneer Awards in London on 8 September.

The awards, which celebrate global innovation in international education, saw organisations and individuals from 39 countries around the world competing across twelve categories, including digital innovation of the year, association of the year and PIEoneer of the year.

Organised by media company The PIE and held at London's RIBA, the event attracted 250 guests, nominees and winners from all over the world to celebrate the hard work of the international education industry in 2017.

Managing Director and co-founder of The PIE, Amy Baker, said the organisation was delighted by the response from within the industry to the inaugural event, receiving more than 300 nominations. 

"We're thrilled to have received so many strong nominations from around the world for the first ever PIEoneer Awards event," she said.

Providers and organisations are helping UK students connect with the world to create truly global citizens, and The PIE wants to recognise the innovators in that relationship building process and help the industry celebrate its achievements.

The first ever winner of the PIEoneer Awards's flagship 'PIEoneer of the Year' was Global Leadership League, a woman's leadership development group based in the USA, that aims to address the significant gender challenges that exist within international education.

The 'Outstanding contribution to the industry' award was the final prize to be handed out, with Markus Badde, CEO of ICEF victorious. With an aim to create a legacy of professionalism in international student recruitment after taking over the running of ICEF from his father, Badde has been a great advocate for positive change across the sector.
