LONDON, April 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A second exhibition of groundbreaking Hyperphotos of French artist Jean-François Rauzier are set to be shown at his UK Gallery - Waterhouse & Dodd - this summer. The exhibition, which opens on the 18th May and runs until the 10th June, will comprise of 13 works, many of which have never been exhibited in the UK before. "It has been 18 months since his last solo exhibition in London, so after touring his work around the globe, we feel this show is a timely reminder of the artists' talents for viewers in London," says Jamie Anderson, who runs the contemporary art program in Waterhouse & Dodd's Cork Street gallery.
Waterhouse & Dodd have undergone a considerable expansion over the last 6 months, with the acquisition of new premises in Savile Row and Greene Street (New York) - but this exhibition will take place in their original gallery space on Cork Street, now home of the gallery's contemporary art program. The gallery has been re-modelled with this in mind, and the space is a more practical viewing arena for Rauzier's magnificent large format digital C-Type prints.
Since Waterhouse & Dodd's first solo exhibition, Rauzier's work has been the subject of a major museum show in Paris and he has received notable private and public commissions. Waterhouse & Dodd have exhibited his works at some of most prestigious art fairs in the world, not least TEFAF Maastricht where an entire edition of 8 works sold on the opening preview day.
This current exhibition brings together works from his recent surreal 'Animals' series, together with more of his iconic architectural pieces. The artists growing fame has given him access to buildings and locations that were previously out of reach - and so through him the viewer visits the Vatican Library and the magnificent rooms of the chateau of Versailles. Despite the use of such august locations, this current exhibition will also feature works from the Molitor series - his own tribute to urban graffiti art, showing that while the artist has a respect for the past, he also has his eye on the future. Whether in a royal stateroom or a disused swimming bath complex, the dizzying effect of detail and scale have the same effect - to draw the spectator into the artist own fantastic vision.
As Rauzier has stated, "I like to catch the spectator. To be really caught, you have to be kept inside, to get lost within the image. I like the viewer to find more details in the works as their eyes wander through the maze." Whilst the enormous power of modern computers and the advances in software have helped him create the 'new realities' in his Hyperphotos - Rauzier is quick to add that he has no need for further advancement on the technological side. Instead, his recent practice has been about refining the narrative contained within his 'dreamscapes' - to try and imbue each new work with greater drama, feeling and content.
