It's A Sign Of The Times -- New Food Labeling Regulations In The UK

LONDON, May 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Food allergy and intolerance are growing health concerns in the UK. Every year there are approximately 4500 hospital admissions and 10 deaths resulting from food allergens. In December 2014, the Food Information for Consumers Regulations (EU FIC) was passed mandating that allergen information involving 14 allergens must be provided in a clear and consistent way on all pre-packed and loose food. This will make it easier for consumers with food allergies to make healthier and safer choices when buying food or dining out.
If you are a business providing loose or pre-packed food, including retailers, restaurants, takeaways, bakeries, and institutional caterers, information regarding the 14 identified allergens must be provided on a signpost for your customers. Any advisory labelling should appear next to the ingredients list. The 14 identified allergens include: celery, cereals that contain gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, nuts, peanuts, sesame seeds, soya, and sulphur dioxide or sulphites.
"It's so important to be able to make informed health decisions when choosing what to eat," says Kristin MacMillan, President of Imprint Plus, a leading manufacturer of eco-friendly, do-it-yourself signage and name badge systems. "With the new Food Industry Regulations consumers can be alerted to foods that may contain allergens, even when they are dining out or taking food home to cook."
A great way to provide information about allergenic ingredients used in food to customers is through the reusable signage systems from Imprint Plus. The signage kits are a fast and economical way to make customised signs. With the patented design software, stylish signage is created on-site by simply typing in the details about the food item, adding a photograph or food establishment logo if desired, and printing the patented inserts using a standard laser or inkjet printer. The inserts slide into the signage, which can be used again and again. When a menu item changes or there is a special promotion, the insert can easily be replaced. The signs are also food safe and can be wiped clean. For more information visit www.imprintplus.com.
