NEWTON ABBOT, England, June 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
A change in the way minor traffic offences are dealt with in the courts could be set to improve the legal framework for motorists. The team at Patterson Law are enthused about proposals that will see dedicated traffic courts used to prosecute offences on the road.
A report on the BBC News website describes how dedicated traffic courts are about to be piloted in nine areas in England and Wales. The aim of the operation is to process motoring offences more quickly in order to improve the efficiency of the prosecution service.
It is easy to see how such a move will affect the speed at which cases are dealt with in the courts once the numbers are factored in. Half a million traffic offences are managed by the courts every year and this clogs up a system that must also deal with serious crimes and general criminal cases.
Traffic cases are often put at the bottom of the courts' list of priorities and this means they take a long time to process. Motorists often have to wait lengthy periods of time for their cases to be resolved.
The specialist traffic offence solicitors at Patterson Law are watching the new developments with interest. Dividing up types of work for different courts to deal with already takes place on a small scale so it is not unusual for a particular court to take care of all the road traffic work in a given area. However, the pilot scheme represents a significant step towards formalising the arrangement.
As well as speeding up the rate at which traffic offences are processed, the dedicated traffic courts may also give prosecutors the chance to specialise in road traffic offence law, at the moment most prosecutors are general criminal lawyers and therefore often at a disadvantage when they come up against specialist motoring solicitors such as Patterson Law.
The pilot scheme will initially be rolled out in Essex, Hampshire, Kent, Lincolnshire, Metropolitan Police, Nottinghamshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and West Yorkshire. It is hoped that the scheme will go nationwide by April 2014.
