"Results improved over the previous quarter, with higher net earnings and cash flow," said Darren Pylot, President and CEO of Capstone. "Operationally, Cozamin had another record quarter of copper production, and the transition from the low grade stockpile at Minto took place in April with the higher grade Area 2 pit now providing daily mill feed, which will increase copper production at Minto for the rest of this year."

Minto Mine, Yukon:

  • Processed lower grade stockpiled ore throughout the quarter.
  • Recorded cash costs(1) of $2.64 per pound of payable copper produced, net of by-product credits and selling costs.
  • Mining focused on pre-stripping in Area 2, which was essentially completed in the first quarter with the Area 2 pit now providing daily mill feed.

  • Continued preparation of the environmental impact study with planned submission in the fourth quarter of 2012.
  • Completed the first stage of the Early Community Consultation Plan to international standards.
  • Completed an infill drilling program to increase the reserve confidence during the payback period and a geotechnical campaign to define pit wall angles for the BFS.
  • Initiated a short metallurgical drill program in the Iris Norte zone.

Kutcho Project, British Columbia:

  • Basic engineering and permitting activities continued throughout the quarter.

Outlook

Capstone's 2012 guidance for 80 million pounds (± 5%) of copper in concentrates at a total cash cost(1)of $1.55 to $1.65 per pound of payable copper, net of by-product credits and selling costs, remains unchanged.

Operations at Cozamin ran very well in the quarter and production at Minto was consistent with guidance and the annual mine plan, which called for the processing of low grade stockpile material through to the early part of the second quarter. Mining in the Area 2 pit at Minto has begun to release ore consistent with the resource model projections, which is now being delivered to the mill and will meet the mill feed requirements for the rest of the year. Milled ore grade is expected to average 1.7% copper for the remainder of the year.
