Middle Aged Men 3 Times More at Risk of Suicide as a Consequence of Personal Debt
LONDON, October 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
Backing up research from the 2012 Samaritans 'We're In Your Corner' campaign, Vincent Bond http://www.vincentbond.com finds middle aged men are more likely to suffer from debt and less likely to ask for help than women, putting this already vulnerable group at a higher risk of suicide.
The damning research found that over 50% of those suffering from personal debt have experienced a significant impact on their happiness, mental health, general health and personal relationships have also suffered at the hands of their problem. The survey found that of those in debt:
- Over 57% of respondents said their personal happiness had been significantly affected by their problems
- 50% said they had experienced mild to severe mental health or health problems
- A huge 61% expressed that debt problems had affected their personal relationships
- Males between the age of 40-49 are the highest demographic affected by debt.
Alarmingly, males aged between 40-49 have been famously pin-pointed as the most vulnerable to suicide by many counselling and mental health organisations and once again in the newest Samaritans campaign (2012 We're In Your Corner), the organisation reaffirmed the disconcerting message; males aged between 35-54 are 3 times more likely to commit suicide than females (of any age). Interestingly, Vincent Bond also found that females are 3 times more likely to seek help and advice about their debt problems from free counselling services such as the Samaritans, Mind and Vincent Bond.
Debt causes extremely difficult circumstances, not just for those who with them, but also for family and friends. Many suffering at the hands of debt do not realise that seeking help and advice can help or they do not know who they can turn to.
