Is this the World's Most Dangerous Infographic?
LONDON, February 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
The World survived the Mayan apocalypse but danger remains. We live in perilous times, says a precautionary new infographic that reveals statistics on the number of fatalities sustained at work, in transit, and during a number of seemingly harmless hobbies, such as swimming and leaping from high places (with or without a parachute).
'The World's Most Dangerous Infographic' was commissioned by the financial website Experts in Money, which specialises in finding life insurance quotes for its online users. Spokesman Ed Beardsell says: "Yes, it would seem a bit morbid for a life insurance website to go on about death. In fact the message is not to cower in fear, but to enjoy all the thrills and spills that make life worth living. We're saying just be aware that there's inherent risk in just about everything. It's a gentle reminder that life is both beautiful and robust, but accidents do happen".
Infographics are used widely to tell a story online by visualising data. In the Experts in Money infographic, the stories being told are of how people live their lives, specifically, by describing how they meet their end. It contains a helpful list of the five most dangerous holiday locations, and the 'deaths per billion journeys' for major modes of transport. "The tone is light humoured", says Ed, "and isn't supposed to be too dark".
The Experts in Money researchers mined their data from various sources, including independent journals, watchdogs, and even cleaning companies - the dangers portrayed in the infographic aren't just sharks and trainwrecks, but germs and other hidden dangers too. For example, the average computer keyboard carries four hundred times as much bacteria as a toilet seat.
Ed concludes: "We figured that in a year ending in '13', which traditionally is not the luckiest number, we had a duty to remind our customers that the world is full of slippery floors and escaped tigers. We have our fingers crossed that people will enjoy our infographic and not cancel any adventures as a result".
