2. 500,000 children under five years old go to casualty annually as a results of accidents in the home

4. It can take less than four minutes for a blocked airway to kill a child but it takes around eight minutes for an ambulance to arrive
5. Over half of road traffic accident deaths occur before Emergency Services arrive. Of those that were preventable deaths, 85% could have been avoided, if first aid had been given before the ambulance arrived.
These truly are scary statistics, particularly when you are most likely to need first aid to assist a family member or friend. Yet less than 25% of British adults have any first aid training.

A recent survey suggested that only 7% of people would feel confident they could carry out first aid on those ill and injured. In Germany and the Scandinavian nations, first aid is already a compulsory part of the school curriculum, which has resulted in up to 80% of people possessing first aid skills.
