Basler, Cognex, and FLIR Systems Take Top Spots in ABI Research's Industrial Machine Vision Camera Vendor Competitive Assessment
SINGAPORE, Feb. 25, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Ranked as the number one industrial machine vision camera vendor, Basler scored highest in innovation and topped 7 of the 8 ranking criteria, announced global tech market advisory firm, ABI Research. Basler was closely followed by Cognex and FLIR Systems in the overall rankings, taking the second and third spots, respectively. All three vendors exhibit strong market recognition and reputation, focus heavily on ease of use and deployment, and are very innovative and future-looking compared to their competitors.
The industrial machine vision camera vendor competitive assessment analyzed and ranked twelve innovative industrial machine vision sensor and camera vendors: Basler, Baumer, Cognex, FLIR Systems, FRAMOS, IDS Imaging, KEYENCE, Laon People, OMRON, SICK, Teledyne DALSA, and TKH, using ABI Research's proven, unbiased innovation/implementation criteria framework. For this competitive assessment, innovation scores examined the technical capabilities of the vendor's software and implementation scores focused on the vendor's commercial ability to deliver their solution around the world across a variety of manufacturing verticals.
A longtime staple of the manufacturing sector, machine vision is the foundation that underpins many emerging technologies, such as robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and smart glasses, and is estimated to reach a near 100 million installed base in 2025. In the early days, industrial machine vision relied on rule-based programming that involved a lot of human expertise. Recently, the emergence of Deep Learning (DL) technology has propelled the automation of such processes. DL models manage to pick up trends and abnormalities in large image and video sets, under a low level of human involvement. FLIR Systems, on the other hand, develops a family of user-friendly and powerful DL-based hardware and software, which allows for more flexible and customizable implementation depending on user needs."
Following the top three players are various niche players including IDS Imaging, Teledyne DALSA, KEYENCE, OMRON, SICK, and Laon People. IDS Imaging and Teledyne DALSA, for example, have managed to release DL-based machine vision solutions. KEYENCE, OMRON, and SICK have ventured into embedded camera market via partnerships with collaborative and autonomous mobile robotics companies. Targeting growing niche markets such as robotics and autonomous vehicles will generate new revenue growth beyond traditional machine vision markets like electronics and automotive manufacturing.
Another interesting development is the rise of independent machine vision cameras with built-in edge artificial intelligence (AI) processors. The conventional machine vision system has a more centralized processing architecture based on industrial PC. "However, as the use cases for machine vision expand into mobile devices and surveillance systems, a new generation of machine vision systems are designed to work as a standalone system, supported by onboard storage for AI-based machine vision models. This has led to the emergence of an AI solution that can auto-generate images and perform self-learning, without the need of large amounts of user data, as in the case of startup Laon People," concluded Su.
