When making the announcement on May 8, 2012, Finance Minister Michael Noonan said, "The addition of ZMDI to Limerick is a major endorsement of Ireland's capabilities in the areas of analogue and mixed-signal electronics and R&D. The company will provide excellent employment opportunities in the Mid-West region for talented engineering graduates and technicians".
The ZMDI research and development centre will focus on the development of products for the smart power management sector, which is a key growth area driven by the demand for increased energy efficiency in data centre cooling, telecommunications and high-end computing.
Welcoming the announcement, IDA Ireland CEO Barry O'Leary said, "IDA is very pleased to support this centre, as it will create highly skilled positions in a regional location that is a key focus of IDA's strategy for regional development in "Gateway" locations. The centre is an important addition to the cluster of power management electronics in Limerick, and through its collaboration with the University of Limerick, it positions the Mid-West region well at the forefront of research in energy-efficient power management solutions".
The Limerick facility further adds to ZMDI's commitment to global growth:
Commenting on the announcement, ZMDI's Bernhard Huber said, "After considering a number of global locations for this strategically important R&D centre, we decided that Limerick was the perfect fit for our company due to the research expertise in the University of Limerick, the availability of engineering skills, the cluster of many leading players in electronics in the region and the support of IDA Ireland."
