US lottery's $476 million rollover reaches into Outer Space

Research commissioned by lottery website WinTrillions shows that a pile of $10 bills totalling $476 million would reach 5.2 kilometres (3.4 miles) in height; that's the equivalent of 13 Empire State Buildings stacked one on top of the other or 2,971 people standing on each other's shoulders.

If $1 bills were used, the pile would actually reach into Outer Space. At 52.3 km (34.4 miles), it would be 6 times the height of Mount Everest and 5 times the depth of the Mariana Trench, the world's deepest ocean floor. In fact, it would stretch more than 2 km (1.2 miles) beyond the stratosphere into space itself.

After surprising everyone by rolling over again on Tuesday, the Mega Millions jackpot has jumped by a staggering $113 million for Friday's draw and, if it was piled up in $10 bills, the increase alone would be 1.2km (0.7 miles) high. That's almost 1.5 times the height of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Put simply, the $476 million Mega Millionsdraw this Friday is a landmark moment in global lottery history, smashing the previous lottery jackpot record - also held by Mega Millions - by $86 million.
