LONDON, December 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
With almost 200,000 people killed or injured every year on UK roads IMI recommends some simple ways to avoid the common mechanical causes of accidents.
Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is warning UK drivers of the dangers of ignoring basic vehicle faults following a study that found factors such as worn tyres, defective brakes and faulty lights all contributing to the number of causalities on UK roads.
2,000 people are killed every year on UK roads and mechanical or maintenance related problems contribute to around 5% of these. Research shows that over half of drivers say worries over maintenance costs cause them to ignore important vehicle checks and regular servicing at garages.
BBC One F1 presenter, Suzi Perry, has joined the IMI to produce short videos demonstrating how easy it is to carry out basic checks such as changing the engine oil, checking the tyre tread, as well as ensuring vehicles are ready for the winter months.
IMI CEO, Steve Nash, says, "Many people ignore basic faults on their vehicles because they don't know how to handle them or they fear garages will take advantage of their lack of knowledge. The cost of not carrying out important checks and getting your car regularly serviced has proven to be fatal."
"Our wish is that every driver should be safe over the festive period and we want them to know that they can find properly qualified and trustworthy local professionals on the IMI Professional Register (http://www.imiregister.org.uk) who they can rely upon to ensure their safety and their family's safety."
