LONDON, March 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A survey carried out by one of the leading price comparison websites, PriceGrabber.co.uk reveals that Mother's Day has the 'marmite effect' i.e. you either love it or you hate it. Just under half, 41%, of the survey respondents answered when given the option, that Mother's Day is 'a very important date, as their Mum deserves to be spoilt'. 16% said, 'it was up there with birthdays and Christmas'. The rest, just under a third (28%) said, 'it's just another commercialised day to get you to buy things'; the remaining 15%, acknowledged that, they 'felt pressure to celebrate the date, as they didn't want to upset their Mum'.

Despite the mixed response to Mother's Day, just over half of the respondents (54%) said, 'they are going to spend the same as last year'. 12% even said, 'they would spend more'. When probed further, the 54% of those who said they would spend more, said, 'it was for personal reasons' and 17% said, 'it was because there are better deals around'. Positively, 17% of those who said they would splash more this year on Mother's Day said, 'it was due to "improved job security"'.

How we shop for Mother's Day is evolving; just under half, 48%, said that they will be buying from a bricks and mortar store. This is almost an even split with the remainder of whom 40% said they will be buying online, the remaining 12% on a tablet or smart phone. The survey also found that incentives for purchasing online, such as free shipping 31%, price cuts 31% and coupons 20%, all enticed consumers to buy Mother's Day gifts in this way.
