Biogas production and utilisation is increasingly being seen as a cost effective, sustainable, and environmentally-friendly means of energy production. Thus, the European Commission has drawn up support programmes to utilise this energy resource to make a greater contribution to help Europe meet its renewable and carbon reduction goals, as well as to support commercial energy organisations to build biogas into their portfolios as a sustainable and profitable business.

The commercial and environmental benefits of biomethane have the potential to drive  exponential growth in end user markets such as biomethane grid injection, biogas trading, bio-LNG, and natural gas vehicle fuels.

The European Biogas Forum to be held on the 22 - 24 May 2012 in Hamburg, Germany will cover the full biogas chain from feedstock supply, production and treatment, and grid injection through to the commercialisation of biogas as a potentially significant contributor to the utility-scale European energy mix.

The Forum will analyse the differing levels of political and commercial support throughout European member states, as well as market barriers to overcome when developing and operating mid- to large- scale biogas plants. The programme will also analyse the commercial opportunities of mid- to large- scale biogas production, as well as technical and regulatory challenges inherent in these operations.
