NFV is a software-based network architecture that leverages virtualization to replace proprietary network hardware elements such as switches, routers, and firewalls with independent software running on commodity servers and white box appliances.

• As an integrated software function on the branch site customer premises equipment (CPE) or off-premises in a cloud environment
• In the network service provider's (NSP's) cloud—PoP, CO or data center

Importantly, the Versa solution supports full-blown routing and is both application- and network-aware, so it can be used alongside or in place of a traditional router.
