Two Women Taking Care Of Business At The Head Of The Household
LONDON, February 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
- Unexpected Role Models To Celebrate International Women's Day In London!
"It's a man's world!", sang James Brown. But when it comes to business Fion Chen and Christine Blackledge have got other ideas.
Neither were born with a silver spoon in their mouth, meaning these ladies have overcome extreme adversities in their lives as they unexpectedly found themselves becoming role models for other women to follow in their footsteps.
Fion has lived in Manchester since arriving with her family from China at the age of 17. As if it were yesterday, Fion recalls, "I couldn't speak English and had left all my friends and family behind." At age 21 tragedy struck when Fion's father suddenly died of cancer. As the eldest child she had to take over the running their Chinese take-away shop. "I had to work every day, couldn't finish university, and financially support the whole family!", remembers Fion.
In 1983 an 18-year-old Christine wanted to fulfil her passion to study law when living in New York. Unfortunately, a bad relationship forced her to return home to Nottingham to start all over again. But next came yet another relationship that ended with her becoming a single mother and even more life challenges to face. Just as vividly, Christine recalls, "Things got to the stage where I even had to spend time in care housing as I had no money."
Today both are happily married with children, but both husbands stand behind their wives when it comes to business! In Fion's case, "My husband trusts my business judgement and gives me the freedom when it comes our various businesses." As for Christine, "My husband is retired now, so he is the one who does the shopping and driving our teenage sons around."
Fion now has a hands-off role in several Chinese take-aways, offers her own DVD training for Buy-to-Let investors and runs a business-development consultancy. She even consults to international clients, such is her reputation spreading.
Christine has finally achieved her lifelong ambition by currently studying law full-time at Brighton University. At the same time she offers a will-writing service, business consultations and also sells a DVD training course for start-up recruitment agencies.
To celebrate the weekend of International Women's Day both ladies are speaking at a London business workshop hosted by their mentor, David Lee. According to David, "I have witnessed Fion and Christine's remarkable journeys over the last 2 years. It is a rare opportunity for me to get both ladies together, so it will be a celebration for anyone wanting to join us."
