About Telford Tigers
The history of the club stretches right back to the early 80's when the brand new Telford Ice Rink opened its doors the public in October 1984. Telford Tigers IH Club Ltd. was formed for season 1985-86 by Central TV commentator Gary Newbon with entertainer David Ismay as chairman and Canadian defenceman Chuck Taylor as player coach. The club were granted permission by the BIHA to join the First Division of the British Hockey League, and finished third in their inaugural season, with near sell out crowds seeing Mark Budz score 134 points and Chuck Taylor make the All Star Team.
The 1987-88 season was Tigers most successful as they won the Southern conference by two points, and beat Northern Conference champions Cleveland Bombers 21-14 on aggregate to take the title. Over the years Tigers have had a number of owners but following a year out of the league in 2009-10, in February 2010, it was announced that a 'Fans Trust' had been formed, and that it was intending to ice a Telford Tigers team in the English Premier League once more.
In April 2010, it was confirmed that the teams' application to the EPL had been accepted, making Telford Tigers the first ever fans owned supporters trust ice hockey team in the world. Player Coach Tom Watkins rejoined the club having played for Tigers earlier in his career and since then has built a reputation for finding and developing young British players while keeping Tigers competitive.
