In recent years, along with the rapid development of domestic ruminant breeding, especially dairy cattle breeding, alfalfa hay has become rigid demand of herbivorous livestock. The 12th Five-Year Plan on Feed Industry encourages raising livestock by using straw, improving the conditions for straw storage equipment and facilities, promoting silage, ammoniated, microbial silage and other processing technologies, cultivating crop stalks commercialized disposal and utilization mode, and improving the straw feed amount and feed efficiency.

In 2005-2012, China had high intensive level of dairy cattle farming, while beef cattle and meat sheep were bred in free-range farming and smaller scale. Therefore, dairy cattle industrial feed output is large, accounting for 90% of the total ruminant industrial feed output. Since 2010, national support of beef cattle and meat sheep breeding, coupled with residents' dietary structural adjustment, has boosted the demand for beef and mutton, and continuously increased beef cattle and meat sheep industry scale. Therefore, the dairy cattle industrial feed demand has relatively stable growth space in the future, while beef cattle and mutton sheep industry feed demand has greater room for growth.
