- Stomp Pad: One small step for musicians, one giant leap for sound!
MELBOURNE, Australia, June 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Musicians, music lovers and live performers take note -- your feet could soon unlock a new world of sounds, effects and entertainment styles. Drummers could be free from holding drumsticks and stand alongside lead singers and guitarists instead of being stuck up the back behind a kit. Soloist and duet musicians such as singers and guitarists could access a broader sound palette, creating a "bigger band" feel. Comedians, actors and clowns could tap into special sound and lighting effects providing an edge to their live performances or that special "surprise" element.
Australian musician, engineer and researcher, Dr Richard Helmer, has created an affordable and simple e-textile device called Stomp Pad, which could revolutionise rhythm and special effects control as we know it. Made from e-textiles, Stomp Pad consists of a foot sized textile pad which plugs into a smart device, such as a phone. A wearable conductive patch is placed on the foot (sole of shoe) and the touching of the patch on the pad enables control of Apps loaded on the device. It is a light-weight, easily transportable, quickly set-up accessory, that fits in a guitar case, handbag or pocket.
The technology is being showcased through live music performances on social media, see https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stomp-Pad/954635484586985?ref=hl, and coincides with Stomp Pad's campaign on Indiegogo http://igg.me/at/Stomp/x/10163602, a global crowdfunding and fundraising site. Crowdfunding is a modern phenomenon whereby inventors and creative minds showcase their ideas to the world and have them publicly funded. Dr Helmer's crowd funding campaign is seeking support and market validation.
Dr Helmer is an engineer, researcher, inventor and musician who captured global media attention in late 2006 with the unveiling of his Air Guitar shirt. His electronic textile research has not only been in the field of music and entertainment but also in sport and health. He is a seasoned musician playing in 8 piece party band "Madhouse" for over 20 years.
"I love playing drums and guitar, with Stomp Pad I get to do both at once! Brilliant!", he said.
"When I'm on stage and improvising to the audience's response, I want a back beat that can keep up and follow me, adding punch when and where I need it. I also need equipment to be simple to set up and use and Stomp Pad is just that. It also feels natural, you just plug it in, step or stomp on it and it works. It's also lightweight and easily transportable. Any muso will tell you, you don't want to be lugging around heavy gear!", Dr Helmer said.
