According to the report, increasing use of metal face masks will be a key driver for market growth. Since 2015, FIH has allowed defenders to wear protective face masks as a precaution while defending penalty-corners. Such a change in the rule came after the death of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes in 2014 after being hit on the head by a bouncing ball. Increasing concerns about the safety of the head after that incident led to the implementation of the rule to use face masks by defenders who are defending the penalty corners.
Further, the report states that exposure to injuries will be a challenge for the market. Head, face, and eye injuries happen regularly in collegiate and school field hockey and can often lead to concussions. Concussions account for more than 40% of all injuries in field hockey.
More than half of all injuries resulted from contact with an elevated ball, while the remaining 45% injuries happened due to contact with a stick or collision with another player. More than 10% of all injuries are so severe that the players are unable to return to the game during the same season. As for the concussion injuries, more than 90% of the players are able to come back in 10 to 20 days. Another common injury after concussions is facial contusions and lacerations.
