Qatar Joins Tall Building Trend With a Focus on Sustainability and Culture

DUBAI, UAE, March 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Over 150 key decision makers from the construction sector gathered to discuss tall building projects at the Tall Building India summit last month with a view to share state-of-the-art structural engineering, the role of constructing vertically, planning for a rapidly expanding population, sustainable solutions and best-practice project management strategies. Director of Broadway Malyan and member of the Editorial Board at the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), Jason Pomeroy, discussed creating vertical neighbourhoods by fostering communities within tall buildings.

Developers have now shifted their focus to the Middle East. According to the CTBUH, one quarter of the world's future tallest building projects will be based within the Middle East region, specifically Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In partnership with the Middle East Facilities Management Association (MEFMA), International Quality & Productivity Centre - an international research firm and the organiser of previous tall building events in this series will be repeating its meeting in Qatar to bring together stakeholders within local and international tall building project case studies.

With 800 tower projects expected to be completed over the next decade, Qatari rulers and developers feel it is important to retain a sense of cultural identity and heritage. This can be achieved by developing projects with a sense of community, based on modern urban living concepts where traditional Arabic architecture is combined with sophisticated technologies that enable a sustainable outcome. There is also a strong commitment to providing facilities which offer a higher quality lifestyle.

Regulatory bodies, developers, architecture firms, consultants and associations are coming together to discuss dynamic sustainable, cultural, structural, architectural and financial trends related to designing and constructing iconic vertical structures that shape the Middle Eastern skyline.
