Plunge in White Christmas Betting Odds as Temperatures Plummet, Report Sky Bet
LEEDS, England, December 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
Sky Bet, the popular UK based online betting firm, can report that severe weather warnings across the UK have led to a flurry of bets today on a White Christmas as forecasters talk up the chances of a picture-postcard December 25th.
The odds of snow falling in London on the 25th now stand at 11/2 with leading online betting firm Sky Bet, having been cut from 13/2.
The sudden cold snap has seen Sky Bet slash the odds of December 25th snowfall in most major cities and the bookie is braced for white Christmas betting to snowball again later this week as temperatures could nosedive to -6C.
Sky Bet spokeswoman Helen Jacob said: "The unusually clement autumn weather saw bookies offering odds on this Christmas being the warmest on record but this week's sudden cold snap has finally kick-started the annual white Christmas gamble."
With areas of Scotland covered in snow on Monday and falls in parts of northern England, the odds of a white Christmas in Aberdeen have contracted markedly to 9/4 (from 5/2). Belfast is in to 11/2 from 7/1 and white Christmas odds in Cardiff have been slashed to 13/2 from 8/1.
Sky Bet's Helen Jacob added: "The first covering of snow always causes an influx of white Christmas bets but it's worth remembering that bets are settled according to the Met Office's definition: a single snowflake must be observed falling on the weather station during the 24 hours of December 25th."
