LONDON, January 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
The county of Sussex is to have its first Ahmadiyya Muslim Mosque opened in Crawley on Saturday 18th January. It will be inaugurated by His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The ceremony will be attended by more than 200 guests representing all the major faiths as well as representatives from parliament and civic society.
People of all faiths and of no faith would be welcomed in the new mosque - to be named Noor Mosque.
Speaking about the role of mosques, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:
"Our mosques are symbols of peace and an abode of prayer. It is our belief that through prayer and service to humanity we can play a positive role in promoting harmony in the world. A mosque should therefore be a source of benefit not only for Muslims but for all people. "
Since its inception in 1889, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has been leading a peaceful revival of Islam. The UK chapter was established in 1913, and throughout the past century the community has worked tirelessly to promote the values of loyalty, freedom and peace. It has raised millions for charitable causes in UK and in the past year alone planted 30,000 trees to help protect our environment.
The community built London's first mosque in 1926, as well as the landmark Baitul Futuh Mosque in south London, which is the largest in western Europe.
Mr Ahsan Ahmedi, Regional President and community's spokesman said:
"We hope that our mosque will be the centre of learning and peace in Sussex. The mosque's name is 'Noor' which means 'light' and we will work hard to illuminate Crawley and Sussex with peace and respect."
Mr Abdul Gafoor, Crawley President said:
"This mosque is open to all who wish to come and pray, or just come to see the mosque and meet us. Men and women have equal access to the mosque and we hope to make it an integral part of our local community life."
Noor Mosque will have a capacity of 250 including men and women and features a newly built minaret. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is entirely self funding and this mosque was built entirely with funds raised by the local members.
The inauguration proceedings will begin at 6.00pm on 18th January. Press and media are welcome; please contact for details.
