RASTATT, Germany, Oct. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- MAQUET today announced that it has joined the "Stent for Life" initiative as an industry partner to support a coalition of leading organizations, including the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI), European Society of Cardiology's Working Group on Acute Cardiac Care, and EuroPCR. The initiative strives to improve the delivery of care for ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients to ensure they have proper treatment access to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), thereby reducing mortality and morbidity.
The "Stent for Life" initiative and partnering organizations aim to identify regions and countries across Europe with an unmet clinical need in the optimal treatment of ACS and implement an action program to increase patient access to primary PCI treatment where indicated.
About the Stent for Life Initiative
The Stent for Life Initiative is a unique European platform for interventional cardiologists, government representatives, industry partners, patient groups and patients to work together to help shape health care systems and medical practices and ensure that the majority of STEMI patients have equal access to the life-saving indication of primary PCI (p-PCI).
The Stent for Life Initiative was launched by the coalition of the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI), a registered branch of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), and EuroPCR at the EAPCI General assembly during the ESC Annual Congress 2009 in Barcelona. Together they are working to increase the use of p-PCI to more than 70 percent among all STEMI patients, achieve p-PCI rates of more than 600 per one million inhabitants per year, and offer 24/7 service for p-PCI procedures at invasive facilities to cover the country STEMI population need.
National Cardiac Societies in 10 countries have signed a declaration that effective actions will be taken to fulfill the Stent for Life Initiative Mission in their country. These countries include Bulgaria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain and Turkey. Each country is implementing an action program to increase patient access to p-PCI.
