Independence Day: Resurgence Main Characters Use QQ IM Service for Video Call between the Earth and the Moon

SHENZHEN, China, June 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- On June 24, the Hollywood sci-fi disaster blockbuster, Independence Day: Resurgence, officially hit China's cinemas more than 20 years after the release of the original.

Not only does the movie provide stunning visual effects, including the global disaster, spacecraft of the future, and air combat, audiences in China were greeted with a familiar figure, that of popular instant messaging service QQ.

Developed by Tencent Holdings Limited and its subsidiary Shenzhen Tencent Computer System Company Limited, and in cooperation with Twentieth Century Fox, QQ's appearance in the film marks the first time the IM service has featured in a Hollywood movie.

On the morning of June 24, a large number of movie fans who have watched Independence Day hurried to see the sequel as early as possible.

Around 20 minutes in, a call is made by Jake Morrison, played by Liam Hemsworth, to his on-screen girlfriend Patricia Whitmore, played by Maika Monroe, between the moon base and the earth. When the call is interrupted due to alien interference, the screen displays, "QQ is disconnected", followed by the system saying, "Thank you for using QQ", much to the amusement of Chinese movie-goers nationwide.

After the movie was over, many audience and netizens were deeply impressed by the placement of QQ in the movie, with one, named Accustomed to Left Hand, saying, "What impressed me most was the sentence 'Thank you for using QQ'."

Since Chinese scientists said, "Let me finish my Shuhua milk" in Transformers 3 in 2011, which set the precedent for the placement of Chinese brands into Hollywood blockbusters, the appearance of QQ in Independence Day: Resurgence continues the collaboration between Chinese brands and Hollywood movies, opening up new avenues for potential growth.
