Human Factor Named the Biggest Challenge in Offshore Safety by Oil and Gas Professionals

Results from an industry survey ahead of Oil & Gas iQ's 2nd annual Offshore Safety Summit on 19-21 March 2012 in Aberdeen - http://bit.ly/wQyjC4 - where leading HSE and offshore safety professionals will present vital information and experience on prevention and response to critical incidents.
According to a recent survey of offshore safety professionals conducted by Oil & Gas iQ, nearly three-quarters of survey respondents claimed there was more pressure on offshore operators regarding Health and Safety (HSE) than there had been in previous years. This is no doubt fuelled by recent oil spill disasters such as the Deepwater Horizon spill, with 11 workers killed and a further 17 injured.
The survey report is released today ahead of the 2nd annual Offshore Safety Summit, taking place 19-21 March 2012 in Aberdeen (http://www.offshoresafetysummit.com), and names problems with technology and equipment as a worry by 10.8 per cent, with a similar number saying that having the right processes in place and reacting to new legislation were their firm's biggest challenges.
At the Offshore Safety Summit 2012, leading HSE and offshore safety specialists from oil and gas companies (ConocoPhilips, Total, Technip, ENI, Saipem, Talisman Energy, Tullow Oil, Maersk Oil and Statoil) as well as regulatory bodies and advisors such as the HSE and the API, will gather to discuss key current topics including: The Step Change Initiative to reduce hydrocarbon releases by 50%, updated and best practice advice on preventing and responding to oil spills, detailed guidance on how to develop an adequate risk assessment strategy, and how to prepare for the regulatory changes on offshore safety about to be introduced by the European Commission.
The summit programme includes a strategic focus day on human factors and behavioural safety, which was highlighted in the report released today as the biggest challenge regarding offshore safety by 48.6 per cent of respondents.

The interview, "Why do we always need a wake up call to get HSE right?" hones in on key risk management and risk perception concerns for all of those operating offshore.
