Harlan Laboratories Announces Winner of Inaugural Harlan Best Communications Award

- Award Recognizes Best Scientific Paper Presented at Europe's Largest Laboratory Animal Science Meeting

INDIANAPOLIS, July 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Harlan Laboratories, a leading contract research organization and research models and services company, is pleased to announce that a team of scientists from the Center of PhenoGenomics at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland was the recipient of the inaugural Harlan Best Communications Award. The award recognizes the best scientific paper presented during the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) International Congress.

The team from EPFL received the award for their research study that aimed to measure the impact of fenbendazole on cognitive and metabolic functions in mice. While fenbendazole is a common treatment for rodents contaminated with gastrointestinal parasites such as pinworms, not much is known of its side effects and how they impact experimental data from rodents that underwent such treatment. The study ultimately concluded that fenbendazole could be a recommended course of treatment for mice with pinworms, as it doesn't seem to produce any major side effects on their neurobiological and metabolic functions.

Titled, "Impact of Fenbendazole on Neurobiologic Functions in Mice" the study was selected from over 300 submissions.

Harlan Laboratories also announced that due to the success of the inaugural award program, the company will continue its sponsorship of the award for the 13th FELASA Congress, which will be held in Bruxelles, Belgium in 2016. The winning entrant will be awarded with € 5,000.

Experts from Harlan Laboratories also gave several presentations during the 2013 FELASA Congress, including scientific posters and speaking sessions. Hilton Klein, VMD, retired VP Regulatory, Science and Innovation at Harlan Laboratories, presented "Continuous Improvement of Quality in Animal Care and Use Programs: Strategies for Optimizing Animal Welfare and Research Using Quality Improvement Techniques with Performance Standards." In addition, Harlan team members gave poster presentations titled, "The Effects of Transportation on Physiology and Behavior of Rats" and "Humane Endpoints in Aging Rodents."
