DUBLIN, May 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Global Sleep Apnea Market Outlook 2020" report to their offering.
The global sleep apnea therapeutic devices market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% during the forecast period (2015-2020)
Innovation and technological advancements are driving the sleep apnea therapeutic devices market.
With the growing non compliant PAP therapy patient population, there is an increasing interest in the development of new alternative devices and procedures that allow the treatment of OSA.
These novel technologically advanced therapies have been categorized into two segment, namely, Neurostimulators and Intra - Oral Devices. The Neurostimulator devices activate the hypoglossal nerve, which is responsible for the movement of muscles in the tongue, has been used as an alternative therapy for OSA sufferers.
These include, Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation and the THN Sleep Therapy by ImThera. The Inspire therapy developed by Inspire Medical Systems consists of a breathing sensor and a stimulation lead, powered by a small battery. This therapy is FDA approved and proven to be effective in sleep apnea treatment. The THN Sleep Therapy by ImThera Medical consists of an innovative, CPAP-alternative, fully implantable device called the Aura6000. The device is currently available for use only in Europe.
The intra oral devices are designed to displace tongue, oral tissue and/or the jaw, allowing the maintenance of an open airway. They are often used to treat mild OSA. These include, SomnoDent and Provent Sleep Apnea Therapy. SomnoDent, is a custom-made oral appliance for the treatment of mild to moderate OSA and is approved for use since 1996. The Provent Therapy by Theravent utilizes nasal EPAP (expiratory positive airway pressure) to treat all levels of severity of OSA.
The alternative therapies are attractive to patients because they are small and discrete, do not emit noise, and are more easily integrated into the patient's normal life. They are more easily portable than a PAP-based therapy, enabling more flexibility for the patient
