The high adoption of power-injectable PICCs is one of the emerging trends in the market for the injection of a contrast media into the body during CT imaging.

CT imaging requires the injection of a contrast media using a catheter for improved imagining throughout diagnostic processes. However, the catheter must be stiff enough to resist the pressures that can approach more than 300psi. Hence, power-injectable PICCs are utilized as these are made of polyurethane, which is a much stronger material compared to silicone (used for making conventional PICCs).

According to the report, over the past few years, there has been an increase in the use of chemotherapy for cancer treatment. Chemotherapy involves the intravenous administration of cytotoxic antineoplastic drugs that circulate in the bloodstream and inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Intravenous access devices provide short-term access to the blood and are widely used in patients receiving chemotherapy once every few weeks. Intravenous access devices provide 360-degrees of encased needle tip protection; they are designed to minimize needle-stick injuries.

Further, the report states that one of the major challenges to the global intravenous access devices market is the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infections in patients that undergo catheter insertions.
