Performance based regulations like the ones implemented in Australia are more beneficial for the growth of geopolymer research and industry.
The main categories of materials from which geopolymer cements may be derived are slag-based, rock-based, fly ash-based and ferro-sialate-based. Despite the naming, most geopolymer cements require blast furnace slag for their manufacture and thus the geopolymer cement industry is intrinsically linked with the availability of slag from the iron and steel industry. Volatility in slag generation may pose a future threat to the industry. Geopolymer cements have a sustainability advantage over Portland cement in that they uses less CO2 during production. Portland cements are a major contributor to global carbon emissions with 7% of global emissions and each ton of cement releasing almost a ton of CO2. Several studies published on the subject portray geopolymer cement using slag byproducts or fly ash to have a carbon reduction of the range of 80%.
Other uses of geopolymers include resins and binders where they find niche uses in the manufacture of fire resistant insulations, paints, medical technologies, infrastructures and automobile strengthening and radioactive and toxic waste containment and potential utilizations in art and decoration. There has been an exponential increase of laboratories and scientific publications, which show a trend of innovation for better materials and their translation into products in the years to come.
