PLYMOUTH, Michigan and LONDON, June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Genesis Genetics, a global leader in reproductive genomics, has opened a new state-of-the-art clinical and research laboratory in London, U.K. Its team of scientists and physicians will focus on the company's core technical expertise – analyzing the genetics of microbiological samples – as well as develop ways to adapt its discoveries into practical applications for the health and well-being of patients.
The new laboratory facility is strategically located in the London Bioscience Innovation Centre (LBIC), where scientists cross-pollinate ideas with enterprise. Mark Hughes, the company's CEO, considers the great possibility of having a laboratory within reach of other chief medical scientists in the area. "It is essential that we are shoulder-to-shoulder with top-fight British scientists who are within walking distance of the leading hospitals and clinics of the city," said Hughes. "We are excited for Genesis Genetics to be at the very core of U.K. life science research and medical care."
Dr. Tony Gordon, Managing Director of U.K. operations, also believes the new location is key for partnering with the many hospitals that London has to offer. "With the nature of our diagnostic work, there is value in being close to the clinics that need our services," said Dr. Gordon. "Due to the high quantity of the U.K.'s private clinical in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment cycles occurring in London, it was time to have a presence there." Genesis Genetics has had an active clinical presence in Nottingham, England, for nearly a decade, and has performed preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for thousands of patients around the world. The company will continue to run its Nottingham facility primarily for patients in the U.K. midlands and the north.
In addition to single-gene PGD, Genesis Genetics provides comprehensive chromosome screening, using advanced technologies to test IVF embryos and noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) of maternal blood during pregnancy– all with overnight results. "We have partnered with Illumina's Reproductive and Genomic Health (RGH) division [the world leader in next-generation genomic sequencing and prenatal testing] to provide highly reliable, cost-effective and very rapid noninvasive prenatal testing for the U.K.," said Dr. Gordon. Headquartered in Plymouth, Michigan, this opening represents the ninth worldwide location for Genesis Genetics, which also has laboratories located in Argentina, Brazil, Jordon, South Africa, Taiwan and the United States.
