Frost & Sullivan: Cisco, Check Point, and Fortinet emerge as champions in the Asia Pacific Network Firewall Frost IQ matrix

Frost & Sullivan has evaluated the top ten network firewall vendors in the Asia Pacific region and assessed them using the Frost Industry Quotient (Frost IQ) matrix. The Frost IQ matrix comprises of four quadrants: champions, challengers, defenders and explorers.
The Frost Industry Quotient - Frost IQ, is a proprietary Frost & Sullivan vendor assessment tool that accurately operationalises and captures the merits and challenges faced by technology vendors in their respective segments and geographies. The tool aims to provide key decision makers with a localised yet objective perspective of the industry in a highly heterogeneous business environment.
In the Frost IQ for Asia Pacific Network Firewall Vendors 2014, Cisco, Check Point, and Fortinet have been positioned in the champions' quadrant, based on a combination of market share performance and future growth strategies as determined by Frost & Sullivan research studies.
A new paradigm shift in IT security is starting to emerge as enterprises begin to accept the possibility that their organizations may be breached, even after they have invested significantly in security technologies to prevent such incidents from happening. Charles Lim, Senior Analyst, ICT, Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific believes that relying on prevention tools will be insufficient as part of the overall security strategy.
"More enterprises are adopting a holistic approach which encompasses detection and remediation capabilities as part of their overall security strategy, where prevention tools are also required to step up their capabilities," said Lim.
"The network firewall will be critical in addressing stronger prevention tools such as incorporating sandboxing technologies, and correlating threat intelligence with other security components in the network ecosystem," he added.
Most network firewall vendors are working on technology enhancements aligned with the current trends in cloud computing, where form factors to address the adaptability of Software Defined Networks (SDN) and mobility with incorporation of Mobile Device Management (MDM) features into the product.
The Asia-Pacific network firewall market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.4% over the forecast period from 2013 to 2020, and is forecasted to reach a total market size of US$3 billion in 2020.
Research from Frost & Sullivan revealed that network firewall market share in the Asia Pacific region was continued to be largely dominated by four main players in terms of their market share performance; Cisco, Check Point, Juniper and Fortinet. In total, the top four vendors accounted for almost 64 per cent of the revenue generated in the Asia Pacific segment.
From a future growth perspective, the Frost IQ also recognises the efforts of Palo Alto Networks, Dell SonicWall and WatchGuard Technologies in becoming strong contenders in the network firewall market, be it with regards to the technological excellence they have shown, or in the effective go-to-market strategies they used.
China-based players continued their strong presence in the network firewall market, especially in the domestic China market. Acquisitions of major network firewall companies to boost their security abilities, such as the case of Venustech acquiring Leadsec has propelled it to improve its firewall offerings and entered into Frost IQ this year.
The Frost IQ report will also address evolving technology such as Internet of Things (IoT), which is accelerating new demand for network firewalls to look at securing critical infrastructure and providing cybersecurity for operational systems, as well as network firewall growth forecast from the present to CY 2020.
