Everything Seems to Succeed in Mauritius!
PORT-LOUIS, Mauritius, April 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Mauritius is fast turning into an extremely attractive destination for expats from various parts of the world namely France, South Africa, England, Benelux and African countries. Why is Mauritius so popular among those seeking a better lifestyle within a calm, welcoming and tropical setting?
According to an interview given to Luxury Mauritius Magazine, Murray Adair, CEO of Indian Ocean Real Estate Company (IOREC), promoter of Azuri Village Project, "Mauritius is a great place to work and to settle thanks to its excellent legal and banking systems and its reliable asset management service. Another advantage is the tax laws. Mauritius enjoys real political stability. The rupee is strong and stable against the dollar. Then it is a bilingual country. The reason why I live in Mauritius is that everything seems to succeed here! It's really phenomenal. Mauritius is going in the right direction: the infrastructure and the quality of buildings have greatly improved."
Overview of Mauritius
Located in the crystal-clear calm shallow azure waters of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius stands as one of the world's great destination. The country hosts a multicultural and peaceful population living in an idyllic setting surrounded by great sightseeing sites, beautiful white sandy beaches, 5-star hotels, an excellent gastronomy, numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites, a wide variety of water sports, hunting, trekking, bird watching as well as the numerous luxurious resorts.
In 2013 - Mauritius key performances
Few countries in the world can top Mauritius in terms of success in the African region and worldwide. This success story is backed by the various excellent rankings performed by the country in various fields:
- 1st in Africa and 21st worldwide in the Global Peaceful Index 2013,
- 1st in the Index of African Governance,
- 1st in the Rule of Law Index for Sub-Saharan countries
- 1st African nation in the United Nation's Human Development Index.
Recently in January last, according to the Forbes 8th annual survey of the Best Countries for Doing Business, Mauritius has been ranked the only African country among the Top 40 economies worldwide for doing business.
Who may come and settle in Mauritius?
Eric Graham, a Switzerland citizen who invested in real estate in Mauritius, asserts in Luxury Mauritius Magazine that he is living the "Mauritian Dream": "there is an atmosphere here which is very different from everywhere else. It's hard to define but seems to be linked to the history of the place (…) I'm building a restful existence here in Mauritius."
There are 3 categories of foreigners likely to live and work in Mauritius: Investors & professionals, entrepreneurs and retirees. To be able to work in the island as a non-Mauritian citizen, an Occupation Permit is required, acting both as a Work and Residence permit. Its application should be made at the Passport and Immigration Office through the Board of Mauritius.
Retire next to the sea under the sun in Mauritius
Mauritius offers a remarkably secure, welcoming and nice setting for people from over the world to come and retire on the island. Retiring abroad implies various advantages and in Mauritius, the cost of living is affordable, medical and health services are of a world-class standard. When considering retiring abroad, one should take into account the pros and cons of the future destination. Apart from climate, infrastructures and standard of living, one of the key factors to take into account for a foreign retiree is accommodation. Mauritius offers lots of accommodation facilities, ranging from fully-serviced apartments to luxurious villas and beachfront residences under both the Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS) and Real Estate Scheme (RES).
Most buyers want to use their overseas property themselves, as a holiday home, for inheritance reasons, or retirement purposes. Furthermore, regarding the profile of typical IRS or RES buyers, "The French, followed by the South Africans are at the top of the list of buyers of RES and most IRS too. The majority of our customers are from the middle class and many are entrepreneurs. Some buy as an investment, others acquire their property as a secondary residence and will spend only a few weeks in it each year. There are also expatriate families wishing to settle for the long term in Mauritius and finally retired people. I think that retirees represent a real opportunity for the country. The climate is pleasant, the cost of carers is relatively low, medical facilities are improving all the time. And the taxation system, including inheritance tax, is very favourable. In fact, Mauritius could easily become an ideal destination for retired people, like Florida. I think it's a community which will prosper here," adds Murray Adair
