Britain's best-loved chocolate maker, Thorntons, asked the nation to help them find the next great chocolate flavour, inspired by their region of Britain. Throughout the summer, chocolate-lovers entered Thorntons Great Chocolate Britain competition with the hope that the chocolate maker would turn their suggested flavour into Thorntons' newest chocolate creation. With hundreds of entries, Thorntons chocolatiers chose the best three inventions from each region and put the ideas to the public vote to find the most popular.
The eleven lucky regional finalists, who suggested a flavour that represented their specific region, were invited to Thorntons chocolate factory to turn their ideas into reality, with the help of Thorntons' chocolatiers. Ideas ranged from Nottinghamshire Apple Pudding, a milk chocolate with Nottingham Bramley apple to Cranachan Crunch, Scottish raspberries with heather honey, rolled oats in milk chocolate and Manchester Tart, milk chocolate with Maraschino cherry jam, vanilla and coconut.
Of the eleven finalists only one could be crowned the overall winner and after 45,000 votes it was the Eton Mess flavour created by Sandra Moran from Windsor that came out on top. Sandra will see her creation go on sale to the public in Thorntons' stores early next year, as well as winning a year's supply of chocolate.
Sandra said: "I have been a chocolate fanatic for years and was delighted to find out my flavour had been voted as the UK's favourite. Eton is one of my favourite towns and I just absolutely love the dessert. I've had a little try of what the Eton Mess chocolate will taste like and it's absolutely delicious so I can't wait to see it in stores".
Keith Hurdman, Master Chocolatier, Thorntons, said: "In a year of celebrating everything that's great about Britain, our Great Chocolate Britain competition was a chance to combine celebrating our fantastic British heritage with the nation's love of chocolate. The search for new flavours really was exciting, not just for those that entered but for all of us at Thorntons as this is the first time we've put our chocolate development in the hands of the public. Eton Mess is one of those great British desserts and the flavour will be a delicious addition to our range, I'm sure it'll be a huge hit".
