The plasterer from Gloucester and his short jumps have caught the attention of the media again, only this time it's without his trademark spectacles.
The biographical movie 'Eddie the Eagle', staring Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, was released in UK this spring 2016 - seventeen years since the idea for the movie was first discussed. Although Eddie admits that the movie is only about 5% factually accurate, the essence of the story reflects his Olympian spirit.
Eddie's only appearance as an Olympian was at the 1988 Winter Olympics, where he represented Britain in the ski jump event. He finished last, in both the 70 m and 90 m events. That's the entire career of the best ski jumper Britain ever had. But in spite of finishing last he stole the hearts of the crowd.
The plasterer with gargantuan spectacles made the '88 edition of the Winter Olympics an unforgettable sportsmanship event by simply trying his best. This is the reason why The Eagle that never soared as high as the others is an inspiration for many aspiring individuals.
