Drivers in the North East Have the Best Knowledge of Driving Abroad

North East residents scored highest on European driving trivia

A new nationwide survey has revealed that residents in the North East of England are the most knowledgeable when questioned on European driving regulations, with an average of 60% giving correct answers.

The survey, which was carried out by leading car hire price comparator Carrentals.co.uk and the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, questioned 1,500 people on the subject of non-UK driving and safety regulations. The results revealed that the majority of respondents from the North East were able to correctly identify legal requirements applicable when driving in European countries such as Cyprus, France and Spain.

70% of respondents were aware that in Denmark it is illegal to drive without headlights on, even during daylight. The same percentage was also correct in stating that, in Cyprus, drivers could receive an €85 fine if caught drinking water while at the wheel. Additionally, over half of those questioned were able to identify that it is a legal requirement in France to carry two breathalysers with you in a vehicle.

With many respondents in the North East citing safety as a primary concern when renting a car abroad, the survey reveals that over 60% of drivers actively familiarise themselves with the relevant Highway Code before driving in another country. Almost 70% of respondents also demonstrate knowledge of the national laws regarding limits and penalties of driving under the influence of alcohol within various countries. Reassuringly, in light of a firm knowledge on non-UK driving rules, almost 90% of North East respondents happily reported never having experienced any difficulties whilst driving abroad.
