Most supply contracts in the Chinese market are for short-term periods. Chinese manufacturer's panel prices are fluctuating month by month (unlike European manufacturers who often fix the price offered to customers for future purchases for several months). This means that the China market is an ideal place to track the changing price of panels on the global market, with global surplus and shortage leading to instant price changes on the China market.
Of key important in a price report is exactly which part of the distribution chain is being covered. The parts of the distribution chain are:
Distributors and wholesalers can be very tricky to cover due to the fact that sales flow through different routes. For example, some Chinese panels are flowing through USA before arriving in Europe via multiple wholesalers due to favourable pricing being given to the US market by a couple of the manufacturers.
The price that installers paid for their panels can generally be tracked quite well, although many installers buy a complete system from system integrators and therefore don't know the prices of individual panels. And of course the price installers sell their panels for can't be tracked as they will sell a complete system plus labour for an inclusive price.
Retail prices, normally sold via online retailers, tell little about the real PV market prices as they are mostly being sold to DIY enthusiasts, and only account for a tiny percentage of the panels consumed around the world.
This price report tracks the manufacturer ex-factory pricing, which is a very clear indicator for the PV market. Also, to add an important degree of accuracy the prices are weighted according to each company's yearly sales, and also separate weighted prices are given according to each company's panels still available on the market for the current year.
