Coaching for a Cause: ActionCOACH Rob Pickering Rises to the Big Wigs Challenge

Rob Pickering - an ActionCOACH Business Coach based in Berkshire, England - has been helping the Sue Ryder charity through the ActionCOACH Coaching for a Cause campaign.

Sue Ryder is a national charity that provides health and social care services to people who have long term and end of life needs. The charity has a network of hospices and residential care centres throughout the UK and also supports people within the community and in their own homes.

Rob's involvement is through a fundraising initiative called The Big Wigs Challenge - a venture that sees business teams given a 50.00 pounds Sterling start-up investment, which they are using to raise as much money as possible for the Sue Ryder hospice in Nettlebed, Berkshire.

The challenge is running until January 2012 and Rob is volunteering around ten hours of his time a month to mentor half of the teams involved in the competition.

The overall aim is to raise 80,000 pounds for Sue Ryder.

"What I am able to offer is some expert advice on the whole process - a lot of the teams I am working with have a great idea but don't necessarily know how best to put it into practice," Rob says.

He explains how his guidance can work for his clients.

"For example, one of the teams is from a cleaning company called Absolutely Fabulous, who are trying to break the Guinness World Record for the most amount of people dressed up as Smurfs at a single time. Their expertise is in cleaning, not marketing and PR, so I have been able to raise the profile of the challenge by using my network of contacts to publicise the event and encourage as many people as possible to join the attempt."

For Rob, Coaching for a Cause is a great way to bring what he does on a daily basis in the "for profit" world to a new set of clients.

"I think the Coaching for a Cause campaign is a fantastic initiative, especially in the current climate with charities struggling for donations - it is way for me as a successful Business Coach to put something back," he said.
