- Just 3% of homeowners who previously received unsatisfactory service say they checked a tradesperson's Public Liability Insurance, professional memberships and qualifications before hiring them
- More than half (55%) rely on online reviews, while just 17% check whether a tradesperson has Public Liability Insurance
LONDON, Oct. 12, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- New research commissioned by the only professional body for the UK plumbing and heating industry has revealed that just 3% of UK homeowners surveyed carry out basic checks, including reviewing Public Liability Insurance, professional memberships and qualifications, before choosing a tradesperson.
Findings from the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) suggest that these homeowners place greater trust in online reviews over recognised professional credentials and licenses, leaving them exposed to avoidable risks and potentially costly mistakes.
The survey, of 2,000 UK homeowners who had received unsatisfactory service from a tradesperson within the last two years, found that 55% rely on online reviews when choosing who to hire, while 44% check evidence of previous work online, such as photographs of completed jobs. Just 28% check membership of a professional body, and 17% check Public Liability Insurance before work begins.
Kevin Wellman, CEO of the CIPHE, commented: "Too many homeowners could be exposing themselves to unnecessary risks by relying on online reviews alone when choosing a tradesperson. Our message isn't to disregard reviews, but to look beyond them. Reviews can be helpful but they don't tell you whether somebody is qualified, insured or working to recognised professional standards.
"It's concerning that even among homeowners who have previously had a poor experience, very few are carrying out basic checks before hiring someone to work in their home. This suggests many people aren't aware of what they should be looking for.
"Spending a few extra minutes to verify a tradesperson's qualifications, experience and insurance could save homeowners hundreds – or even thousands – of pounds in remedial work and give them greater confidence that they're choosing someone they can trust."
Homeowners looking for a qualified plumbing or heating engineer can use the CIPHE's Find a Professional Plumbing or Heating Engineer directory.
