- Outspoken Comedian Signs Groundbreaking Multi-tiered Deal To Include a Stand Up Special Premiering Exclusively 10th October, Four Docu-comedy Specials Arriving in 2015 and, in 2016, the First-Ever Talk Show for the Global On-Demand Generation
BEVERLY HILLS, California, June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Chelsea Handler will join together with Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) to create an all-new talk show for the world's leading Internet TV Network. Beginning in early 2016, the show will debut simultaneously in all Netflix territories for members to enjoy however and whenever they like.
The new talk show will feature an updated format that still encompasses Chelsea's unfiltered opinions on topical entertainment and cultural issues, as well as her signature guest interviews.
But first, on 10th October, Netflix will premiere Handler's first one hour stand-up comedy performance based on her sold-out tour, "Uganda Be Kidding Me Live". She will be taping the special in Chicago on Friday 20th June at the Harris Theater.
In 2015, Chelsea will create four new docu-comedy specials exclusively for Netflix featuring her efforts to gain a better understanding on a variety of subjects ranging from NASCAR to politics and from Silicon Valley to the NBA draft. Handler will produce the stand-up special, docu-comedy specials and new talk show along with her partners in Borderline Amazing, Tom Brunelle and Brad Wollack.
"If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested. I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. I'm more excited than I've been in a while, and the team at Netflix is the most forward-thinking, alert group I've sat down with in ages. No offense to the Shahs Of Sunset," said Chelsea.
"The internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television and together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late night part…" said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.
"Chelsea has built a huge following on tour, on nightly TV and through her best-selling books, and we can't wait to introduce her breathtakingly honest and irreverent voice to our global membership," he added.
Chelsea Handler is one of the most exciting and successful figures in the entertainment industry. Handler was honoured as one of Glamour Magazine's Women of the Year in 2011 and was also featured in TIME magazine's annual TIME 100. Both publications recognised Chelsea for her multiplatform success as a bestselling author, talk show host, stand-up comedian and actress.
As the host of E!'s Chelsea Lately, Handler remains the only female to break into the otherwise male-dominated late night arena. She has built Chelsea Lately into one of the highest rated shows on E!. She will end her successful run on Chelsea Lately on 26th August 2014.
Handler is one of the leading non-fiction authors with five bestselling books currently in print and was named "one of the clear winners of 2010" by Publisher's Weekly. She recently released her fifth book, Uganda Be Kidding Me, about her travels, which was her fourth book to debut at no.1 on the New York Times Bestseller List. In support of the release, Handler embarked on the "Uganda Be Kidding Me Live" tour which included 35 cities in the US and Europe.
Uganda Be Kidding Me is the third book published by her Grand Central imprint "Borderline Amazing/A Chelsea Handler Book"; the first was Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me, and the second was Ross Mathew's book Man Up: Tales of My Delusional Self-Confidence which was released in May 2013. On 28th March 2010, Handler had three books ranked at No.1, 2, and 3 on the Bestseller Lists simultaneously – a remarkable feat for any author.
