The Champalimaud Foundation will hold an unprecedented conference in Portugal, dedicated to the unknown future of humanity and the discovery of the next 100 years. Under the title The unknown, 100 years from now: a voyage of discovery, the Foundation will challenge a group of distinguished speakers from various fields of knowledge to reflect upon the world that awaits us in 2115. The Conference will take place on 4th and 5th December, in the Auditorium of the Champalimaud Foundation, in Lisbon, and will be live streamed to the world [via YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/embed/9-xeVyb-LF4 ].

Fernando Henrique Cardoso will be, at the invitation of Leonor Beleza, President of the Champalimaud Foundation, the host of a debate that will focus on four key topics: (i) Medicine and Medical Research; (ii) Tools of the Future; (iii) Science; and (iv) Freedom, Knowledge and Values.

The former Brazilian President and member of the Champalimaud Foundation's General Council will join other world-renowned figures such as Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, the former President of the Portuguese Republic, Jorge Sampaio, and the Winners of the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Peace respectively, Robert Horvitz and Shirin Ebadi.

"We wanted to bring to Lisbon some of the key people responsible for pushing back the boundaries of knowledge - the men and women who, thanks to their foresight, have managed to lead and anticipate transformative movements that would go on to define the world we live in today," explains Leanor Beleza, President of the Champalimaud Foundation. "Over these two days, we will challenge them to share with us some of this vision of the future, as well as their expectations for the next century."

What impact will the new frontiers of science, medicine and technology have in the redefinition of modern societies? Will the boundaries be pushed back so far that we will be unable even to recognize ourselves, not to mention humanity? And what about our values and morals? Will they remain the same? These are just some of the issues up for discussion.
