One of the many highlights of any trip to Oman is a tour of its atmospheric and vibrant capital, Muscat, voted Arab Tourist Capital 2012. First-time visitors to Muscat are often stuck for words to describe its enchantment. It is a perfect blend of old and new, enjoying a dramatic setting with mountains on one side, the Indian Ocean (Arabian Sea) on the other and is home to luxury hotels, spas and three 18 hole golf courses.
Beyond Muscat, day tours or short overnight stays to former capital city Nizwa and the Jebel Akhdar, just over two hours drive from Muscat is a must, as the area is a playground for the outdoor enthusiast completed with boutique hotel and camp. A three hour drive from Muscat is the vast Wahiba Sands which offer world class desert safari experiences and luxury camping options, with visits to the turtle reserves of Ras Al Jinz, a must see attraction for any nature enthusiast with a new tented camp recently opened on site.
The second largest city Salalah, in the Southern region of Dhofar, is a one hour flight from Muscat where visitors can explore the flourishing frankincense trees, lush green valleys unique to the region and venture towards the vast Empty Quarter for an awe-inspiring desert safari. The Musandam peninsula, separated from Oman by the UAE, is often referred to as the "Fjordland of Arabia". Visitors can fly direct with Oman Air from Muscat or take the six hour ferry to discover the ancient charm of the main town Khasab. The rugged landscape of the majestic fjords have created world class waters for snorkelling, diving, sailing and dhow cruises.
ABOUT THE VIDEO
Oman's Ministry of Tourism have launched new promotional videos on the Sultanate, with ten, six and four minute versions available.
Her Excellency Maitha Al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary of Oman's Ministry of Tourism, said: "The new DVDs build on our global brand campaign on BBC Worldwide and BBC.Com. The DVDs carry the same evocative tone, look and feel that makes Oman a stand-out destination in the Gulf. The DVDs are a unique introduction to beautiful Oman."
The DVDs are the work of up and coming British Director Charlie Targett-Adams who said: "My previous Middle East experience was a holiday in Dubai, so Oman's overpowering landscapes and bright natural colours were a great discovery. I am delighted to be able to show this very special destination to the world. 'Beauty has an address' is such a brilliant way to describe Oman!"
