LONDON, July 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
This week, 9-15th July, is National Transplant Week and it's a great time to think about joining the Organ Donor Register. One call or even one text could save a life.
Kayleigh Blamire is 25 years old and has kidney failure. She joined the waiting list for a kidney transplant five years ago. "Everyone kept saying to me that I'd get a kidney really quickly as I was young and healthy. I was full of hope and waited for a phone call every day. Now five years later, I'm still waiting every day for that call and I'm starting to lose hope. I feel invisible."
"I don't know where I am on the waiting list and with nearly 700 other people waiting for a kidney, I feel like a drop in a vast pool."
The British Kidney Patient Association provides help and support to people whose lives are disrupted by kidney disease. It gives more financial aid to kidney patients and families than any other organisation in the UK. Last year grants to individuals and hospitals exceeded £3 million.
However, no amount of money and support can make up for not being able to have a kidney transplant. A transplant helps to transform lives away from dialysis and offers a better long term outcome. Kayleigh Blamire would love to start a family. "I dialyse at home now and I try to live my life as best as I can, but I still rush towards the phone every time it rings."
Rosemary Macri, CEO of the BKPA says, "Kidney transplants save lives. We really hope that people will use this National Transplant Week to join the Organ Donor Register."
