2012: a Holidaying Year in Review

2012 was a great year for many reasons. We had the Olympics, the jubilee and we also had great holidays. Millions of us jetted off around the world for sun, relaxation and good times - but where were the best places to go?

Here, Thomas Cook provides their review of 2012 - looking at the best holiday destinations we decided to visit over the past twelve months:

Benidorm

The always-popular Spanish resort was loved even more this year thanks to stunning weather and great prices. For those who didn't manage to get Olympics tickets the value for money in Benidorm over those three weeks was nothing short of spectacular.

The town's Feast of Assumption festival drew huge crowds in August with a party atmosphere running through the streets. For those who are religious it is an extremely important time of the year with strong historical significance.

Dalaman

One of the hottest new destinations this year was Dalaman in Turkey. The eastern region, which is often overlooked in favour of its western neighbours, came into its own this year with a host of new luxurious hotels.

Along with the top quality facilities and scorching weather, visitors also flocked for the annual Dalaman Festival. The May event saw thousands enjoy traditional Turkish cuisine in and around the town's old square.

There was also music and entertainment throughout the afternoons and evenings with special boat trips put on for romantic candle-lit dinners.

Menorca

Menorca has long been popular with Brits on their summer holidays but this year the island was exceptionally busy with more and more people making the short trip to the Spanish island.

Summer fiestas have always caught the imagination of tourists with the Festes de St Joan being a particular favourite. The three day event saw thousands flock to the capital with a mix of fireworks, traditional games, great food and bonfires helping to keep the crowds entertained.

For those who like their music, the annual classical music festival in July is a treat. The country's best orchestras meet on the island for a week-long celebration of all the great composers. So whether it's Bach or Beethoven, Mozart or Wagner, there is sure to be a venue and concert for you. The local restaurants also put on special menus for the festival with pre-concert prices across the week - what could be better?
