LEMONCAT Picks up Funding from Delivery Hero Investors

First online catering marketplace just for companies
Rocket Internet's Convenience Food Group, Point Nine Capital, Target Global and Lukasz Gadowski have invested a seven-figure sum in the seed round for the new online catering marketplace LEMONCAT, through which customers can book and pay for catering online. The company was founded by former Delivery Hero COO, Doreen Huber. The 34-year-old Berliner wants to establish LEMONCAT in Germany and build it into a global player, mirroring the Delivery Hero success story - this time in the catering market.
The professional catering market in Germany is worth billions, with over 17,000 caterers in the country. The top 10 caterers have a joint annual turnover of 2.5 billion Euros (gv-Praxis, DFV). The US market is even larger still, with businesses spending an annual $19.6 billion on food for meetings (Technomic: Catering Insights Program 2015).
But until now there hasn't been an online marketplace that was just for companies. "Our offer is primarily for business customers," explains Huber. "Companies that value a strong corporate culture want to impress their employees and customers with good catering. We want to help them do this." Using LEMONCAT, business customers can quickly and easily order the highest quality catering for board meetings, team meetings or corporate events.
"There has been a loud call from the business world for an uncomplicated online catering offering," confirms investor and Delivery Hero founder Lukasz Gadowski. "But the service has to be simplified and digitised. With so much international experience, as well as know-how in the food sector, Doreen Huber and her team are the right people for the task."
The latest Metro Founder Study 2015/16 shows that the food service industry is open to change. Three quarters of restaurateurs see digitalisation of the industry first and foremost as a chance to heighten awareness, and almost half hoped for a better image.
From today business customers from Germany can submit catering requests via LEMONCAT, to receive an individual quote. The online marketplace will open in the coming weeks, through which customers can book and pay for catering online. Additional international markets will be developed as early as next year.
