Filtersafe to Open 5,000 Square Meter Assembly, Sales and Service Center in Hong Kong

Filtersafe, a leading global manufacturer and supplier of ballast water systems for industrial shipping, opened a 5,000 square meter assembly, and sales and service center in Yui Lian, Hong Kong.

The center, the first of its type in Hong Kong, will add significant services to Yui Lian-based maritime service facilities which will allow them to compete with existing ballast water treatment facilities in China, Korea and Singapore. It is being created in line with the Hong Kong government's directive to create an international maritime center.

Filtersafe will be working closely with Yui Lian Dockyards Limited & Yui Lian Dockyards (Shekou) Limited, which operate six docks at Yui Lian and provides a range of maritime repair and maintenance services. Yui Lian Dockyards is a subsidiary of China Merchants Industry Holdings.

An opening ceremony on 14 April was attended by Filtersafe executives including CEO Etai Dagan and Asia Pacific Manager Ares Ho. Representatives of Yui Lian Dockyards including Mr. Zhang Zhi Liang (General Manager, Ship Repair Division), Mr. Bill Marcus Ng (Manager of Marketing Department), Mr. Yui Lian, Board of Directors member, and Mr. Huang, Qiang Zhong (Deputy General Manager) also attended. Others present included Elad Goz, Consul, Head of Economic & Trade Mission of Israel in Hong Kong, representatives of InvestHK and PACT Environmental Technology Company Ltd.

The facility will also double the production capacity of FilterSafe, enabling the company to produce 1500 Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) filters per annum in its Israeli and Hong Kong plants.  

Filtersafe chose Hong Kong as its regional base due to the city's central position, its status as a free port and its unrivalled logistics.

About half of the Yui Lian center's floor space will be used for assembly and workshop functions. The other half will house research, the regional office and sales and marketing.

Asia Pacific waters are home to one of the world's largest shipping industries and there is intense competition between the various maritime service centers in the region.

Regional ship owners and operators are upgrading ballast water treatment in anticipation of the coming into force of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM).

Adopted in 2004, the Treaty is not yet in force but it is expected that it will become law within a short time frame. The equipment required under its provisions is designed to prevent the spread of harmful aquatic organisms from one region to another. This is achieved by establishing standards and procedures for the management and control of ships' ballast water and sediments.
