A hot topic in education, blended learning is a mix of traditional face-to-face teaching and online learning. As schools adopt digital learning platforms, teachers want to know how to use them efficiently. They are turning to blended learning approaches for the answer.
"Blended learning is both simple and complex. At its simplest, blended learning is the thoughtful integration of classroom face-to-face learning experiences with online learning experiences," says itslearning education researcher and former teacher Morten Fahlvik.
"Blended learning is performing or conducting your teaching in a unified classroom - the combination of the physical classroom and the virtual classroom. You use the traditional learning space and then you add something to it," he explains. "Most teachers look at the two dimensions of blended learning - the physical and virtual classroom - as two separate things."
The physical school and virtual world
Blended learning involves students learning in different locations, whether at school, at home or somewhere in between. In most cases, face-to-face teaching happens at school and online learning happens at home. But schools and teachers blur these lines. For example,
Blended learning is mostly about planning and conduction teaching utilizing the unified classroom. It does not need to be technically advanced; it is more about the pedagogy that lies underneath. A teacher gives the students a task in class. This could be a question, something to read, etc… The students also get the same task in the learning platform and the homework is to work with this question/problem. The important part is that the teacher brings the student work into the teaching in the classroom.
The process can be illustrated like this, but we need to add the unified classroom context.
Designed for teachers and how they want to teach, itslearning is a cloud-based learning platform that connects teachers, students, parents and school leaders - both in and outside the classroom.
