EXETER, England, June 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Two clinicians from Lincolnshire East Clinical Commissioning Group (LECCG) will be presenting their experiences of the FDB solution OptimiseRx.
LECCG is an area with high deprivation and an elderly population. 24.4% of LECCG's residents are over 65 years of age compared to the 16.6% national average and in one practice, 37.3% of registered patients are over 65.
Not surprisingly, the disease prevalence is very high (diabetes 8% on average and 12.5% in one practice whilst the national average is 6%). A further challenge is the influx of 250,000 holiday makers over the summer and an unregistered caravan population of around 5,000. It is not then surprising that the CCG faced a prescribing overspend of £1.8 million in 2013.
The need for assistance to tackle rising prescribing expenditure and also to support local healthcare initiatives was identified by both the CCG board and regional Greater East Midlands Commissioning Support Unit (GEM CSU) medicines management team.
Dr James Howarth, GP Chair Skegness and Coast Locality said, "We wanted a point of prescribing tool which was simple, quick, integrated with our clinical systems, adaptable, locally responsive, with as much emphasis on quality as cost-effectiveness."
"We wanted it to offer alternatives at the point of prescribing rather than just tell prescribers to use something different or look at the formulary and, at the same time, give information on why their prescribing was being challenged or most GPs would be unlikely to accept that challenge."
Dr Howarth will detail his CCG's interest in, and expectations of, the OptimiseRx solution and show how local formulary and healthcare initiatives have been incorporated. Dr Fermin Blanco will take the audience through a number of prescribing illustrations in TPP's SystmOne featuring OptimiseRx.
Dr Blanco commented, "As our whole CCG uses TPP's SystmOne, once the initial pilot concluded and was deemed a success we had the opportunity to roll out the innovative OptimiseRx solution as a piece of extended functionality within our existing clinical system."
Dr Howarth and Blanco's presentation, "Introducing point of care medicines optimisation support into NHS Lincolnshire East CCG; the concept, the practicalities and the benefits," will feature in the CCG Business Stream of the Commissioning Show on 25 June.
