In the increasingly competitive global pay-TV industry, cable TV operators are searching for ways to increase the amount of IP video they can provide to their subscribers. One way to accomplish this goal is to upgrade existing equipment in the cable headend with Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP)-capable products.
CCAP products are designed to integrate the functions of the Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) and the Edge QAM device. In addition to increasing a cable TV system's capacity to support DOCSIS-based IP video, CCAP effectively combines the two components into a single architecture with increased QAM density and overall capacity.
The first CCAP product deployments are expected to occur in North America in 2013. Led by Comcast, which is on track to deploy CCAP products by mid-2013, a number of other leading cable TV operators are conducting lab tests or field trials in expectation of deploying CCAP products over the next 12 to 24 months. However, most CCAP product vendors do not expect a significant surge in demand for their products until 2014/2015.
This research report examines the development and deployment of CCAP products. It discusses the background behind the development of CCAP, the projected value of deploying CCAP-capable equipment, and provides a timeline for expected CCAP deployments in North America and around the world. It also profiles CCAP vendors and discusses their product development and deployment strategies. In addition, the report provides a worldwide CCAP equipment revenue forecast through the year 2017.
