Waitrose, food shops of the John Lewis Partnership, has been awarded the title of Supermarket Wine Merchant of the Year 2000 at the Wine Magazine International Wine Challenge 2000 awards ceremony held last night at the Hilton Hotel, London.

This is the third time in four years that Waitrose has won this prestigious award.

Director of Buying, Steven Esom says: "This award reflects the flair and expertise of Waitrose' four Masters of Wine in selecting wines of quality and excellent value and reinforces our enviable reputation as a first class wine merchant."

Julian Brind, Head of Buying Wines, said: "We aim to offer our customers a wide range of excellent wines & spirits, keeping a balance between authentic traditional styles, and those that are new and exciting. At every level we aim to offer good value."

Waitrose is able to offer its full wine assortment on the internet, http://www.waitrose.com or by mail order, Waitrose Wine Direct. Our specialist wine services include En Primeur, which allows customers to purchase top class wines prior to general release.
